Jim McDaniel was the son of George Moses McDaniel and Dolly Taylor McDaniel. He had one brother, George Moses, Jr. and two sisters, Coye Goforth and Annie Brooks. He was born and raised in the western mountains of North Carolina.He served as a paratrooper in World War II and continued serving his country through the National Guard. In 1947 he married Mary Helen Harris from Forest City, N.C. He was adored by his children, Julia Ann Becker, Jean Harris Scott, James Howard, Jr. He had five grandchildren, Paul Lee McDaniel Courtney, Angela Marie Cross, Marcelle Mary Becker, Stanley James Cross and Helen Marie McDaniel. He had six great grandchildren. He worked until his hands literally bled as a bricklayer to provide a better life for his children. He provided his family with a beautiful home, education and a complete secure future.He lived in Alexandria, VA. from 1953 to 1981 where he served as Vice President of United Masonry,Inc. and founded Beacon Masonry,Inc. He was a true Washington Redskins Fan and held season tickets which he passed on to his children. He loved antique cars and had a talent for restoring them. His pride and joy was a 1936 Ford Coupe with a rumble seat. During Christmas, he had his brother-in-law would drive through town while he sat in the rumble seat dressed as Santa Claus, waving and tossing candy to all the children. He loved life to its fullest! He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a strong Christian and an active member of Groveton Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA. and Florence Baptist Church in Forest City, NC.He died after an eight month battle with lung cancer on August 5, 1981. During this time, he volunteered to take experimental drugs hoping to assist in finding a cure to help future generations. He was a strong and brave man who loved his country and his friends and most of all, his family.
