Served as a private in Co. A, 54th Indiana Infantry
Enlisted: 28 SEP 1862
Mustered in: 28 OCT 1862 Indianapolis, Marion, IN
Hospitalized: 29 AUG 1863 University Hospital, New Orleans, w/ dysentery

Believed to have been originally buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery, New Orleans, LA.

Per Joseph Mann on 5.11.2017:
I checked with the cemetery office and they have no record of John Spleen. This is not surprising given the date of burial. I then went to the location [formerly listed on this memorial as Grave 180] and it is clearly not his location.

All known federal dead buried at Cypress Grove were exhumed between 1867 and 1887 and moved to Monument Cemetery (now Chalmette National Cemetery). I also checked that cemetery's listing of burials and he is not listed. I assume he was exhumed and moved to either his home town or more likely is at Chalmette in an unknown grave.
