Georgia Ruth Criswell LaMar, 86, Texas County pioneer and longtime educator, died Thursday, October 20, 1994 at her home here in Guymon.

The daughter of Maude Edith (Hunter) and Arthur Preston Criswell, she was born January 12, 1908 in Becksmill, Indiana. She moved with her family to the Texhoma area as a young girl. After attending Texhoma schools and graduating from Texhoma High School, she graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1933. She later did post-graduate work at the University of Colorado and Oklahoma State University.

She was married to Grester H. LaMar on July 22, 1941 in Raton, N.M.

LaMar taught for over 31 years, teaching in the Eva community, Hooker and at the Guymon High School from 1953 - 1965 and served as librarian from 1965 to 1973. She helped many students at school and was known to tutor many after school. She also worked as Deputy Texas County Tax Assessor for several years.

LaMar also served on the Panhandle State University Foundation, and was instrumental in the development of many of the libraries in the state. She was also responsible for the development of the state-wide, inter-library loan system. She served on the Oklahoma Department of Libraries for more than 15 years and was acknowledged as Chairman Emeritus of the Oklahoma State Library Board, in May 1993. She was honored by Governor, Henry Bellmon with the "State of Excellence" award in 1987 for her library service.

Active in many local affairs, Mrs. LaMar was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Guymon Rebekah Lodge, Rose Garden Flower Club, Sigma Phi Club, Artists' Studio Northwest, Texhoma Historical and Genealogical Society, the Sherman County Depot Museum, (Stratford, Texas), Guymon Museum Board and the Texas County Republican Party. She served various offices on the following boards: Oklahoma Panhandle State University Scholarship Foundation and the No Man's Land Historical Society, both in Goodwell. Dunaway Manor and the Texas County Memorial Hospital Foundation. She was honored as Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year in 1988. In 1990, she received the Woman of Achievement Award from the National General Federated Woman's Clubs.

She was an active member in the Presbyterian Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher and was Sunday School Superintendent for 17 years and was also active in the Ann's circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grester LaMar who died on December 24, 1973, one sister and three brothers.

Survivors include a son, Robert LaMar and his wife Carol of Texhoma; two sisters, Geneva Corbin and her husband, Bill of Spring Valley, Calif. and Zanobia Irwin of Mt. Prospect, Ill.; two grandsons, Matthew and Michael LaMar both of Texhoma and numerous nieces and nephew; and a special friend and caretaker; Mrs. Kathryn Gillum of Guymon.

Committal services will be Monday, October 24, 9:30 a.m. at Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon and Memorial services will follow at 10 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church, Guymon with Rev. Dick Powell and Rev. Jim Jacobson, pastor, officiating.

Services are under the direction of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, of Guymon.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until 9 p.m.

The LaMar family requests that all memorials go to the Guymon or Texhoma Public Libraries in lieu of floral tributes. Memorials will be accepted at the Henson-Novak Funeral Home, Box 1306, Guymon, Oklahoma73942.
