Date of death was either in 1879 or 1880. Last public document he signed was on on September 27, 1879. Since he was not listed in the 1880 mortality census the logical deduction is that he died at end of 1979. MY GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER. HUSBAND TO REBECCA MANGUM NEWMAN. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM MANGUM, SR. AND ANNA GOGGANS OFCTHE BUSH RIVER COMMUNITY OF NEWBERRY, SC. GRANDPA JESS WORKED FOR J. W. WARD AT A GRIST MILL. THIS GRIST MILL WAS LOCATED ON MANN''CREEKAND SOMEWAY ABOVE THE MILL THERE WAS A DISTILLERY. NO ONE KNEW WHO OWNED THE DISTILLERY BUT STORIES HANDED DOWN PROVE THAT WORKED AT IT AS WELL AS THE MILL. According to a warrenty deed on file in Newberry County in the Deed Room of the Clerk of Court, Jesse G. Newman and Rebecca M. Newman sold a tract of land to John Mangum on November 10, 1836. We know Jesse G. Newman could write because he signed his name to the did. Rebecca signed by making her mark so we know that she could not write. The approximate date that Jesse G Newman and Rebecca Mangum Newman moved to Haralson County, Georgia is know but was approximately in 1840 as the land and church records indicate this as the approximate date. Also, there is a deed on file in the Superior Court of Haralson County, Georgia showing that J.G. Newman bought land in Haralson County, GA, as the deed was dated November 19, 1842, which gives us the approximate dates of between 1836 when they sold their house in Newberry County, SC and 1821 when they purchase real estate in Haralson County, Georgia, which was Carroll County at that time because Haralson County was not created until 1856. The exact piece of property was land lot 159, in the 8th Land District, 5th Section of Haralson County, Georgia and consisted of 102 1/2 acres, which was paid for in gold in the amount of $100.00. This deed was recorded in the Deed Records of the Clerk, Haralson Superior Court on August 16, 1869, in Deed Book A, age page 670, by G B. Genkins, Clerk, Haralson Superior Court, Buchanan, Georgia. The Courthouse records indicate that Jesse was a Justice of the Peace for 20 years from 1857 - 1877. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Haralson County for eleven (11) years from 1865 - 1876. Her performed many marriage as Justice of the Peace at many marriage ceremonies. Jesse G. Newman and Rebecca Mangum Newman has seven children; to wit: 1) Willaim M. Newman; 2) Ellzabeth A. Newman; 3) Caroline S. Newman; 4) James A. Newman, 5) Winey Lawson Newman; 6) Charles Wesley Newman and 7) John R. Newman. Charles Wesley Newman was my GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER who will be discussed later.
