Betty Joan Pinkerton Zacher was born March 25, 1940, in Chadron, NE, and was the only daughter of Loretta Kathryn Lecher and Harry Lamoin Pinkerton. She died suddenly on December 7, 2012.
She was raised on the family farm outside of Chadron, and graduated from Chadron High School. During High School, she learned to play the organ and accordion, talents that she maintained her entire life. She worked at both the Advisor and at Ideal Market. In May 1962, she married Raymund F. Sholl, and in 1963, their daughter, Starla Rae Sholl, was born. They moved to Gordon, NE, in 1965. While living in Gordon, she was not only wife and mother, but also managed the non-food section of Ideal Market. She went on to be co-owner of the Jack and Jill Market. In the late 1960's Betty bought herself a Honda 90. At the time, she was the only woman in town that rode a motorcycle.
In 1981, Betty moved to Rapid City, SD. She married James (Jim) H. Zacher on November 3, 1984. Betty & Jim were each other's best friend. She worked at Rapid Chevrolet, and then after several years at Timberline, Corp, she retired.
Betty and Jim shared a love of outdoors. Their favorite hobbies included camping & fishing. Even at age 72, Betty was able to drive a pickup pulling a 26ft fifth wheel camper and an 8ft trailer behind it with a four wheeler on it. She loved animals and as a child had a pet deer and raccoons. Later in life, she cultivated her love of birds. Her yard was full of feeders which she kept fully stocked so she could sit outside and watch them. In addition to her family, she leaves behind two dogs and two cats that she rescued. She would not turn any animal away.
Her number one hobby for her entire life remained motorcycle riding. She owned 6 different motorcycles, including a Harley Superglide. Many will remember her riding her blue trike through the hills. Her first Sturgis Rally was in 1972: she never missed a year, attending 40 rallies.
She had amazing courage and strength, and will be missed by many.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Zacher of Black Hawk; and her daughter, Starla Rae Sholl of Chicago, IL.
Memorial services are Tuesday, December 11, at Kirk Funeral Home, Rapid City, SD, with Rev. Sheila Schauer officiating.
