John R. Bathke, age 85, of Oshkosh died at his residence on December 4, 2012, surrounded by his family. John was born on July 12, 1927, in Oshkosh the son of the late Bernard and Mary (Hintzke) Bathke. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. John married Arleine Traxler in Oshkosh on July 3, 1954. He worked for the Oshkosh school district for 30 years as a custodian retiring in 1992.

Those who worked with John knew him as "Mr. Nice Guy". After Arleine retired they moved to their second home in Redgranite, where you would find John outside working usually cutting down trees with Arleine by his side. John was a "jack of all trades"; there wasn't anything he couldn't fix. In his earlier years he enjoyed hunting and camping with his family and friends. Throughout his life he always was doing some type of woodworking project. John was always joking around if you were down all you had to do was find John and he would brighten your day. John loved spending time with his family and he always had a dog by his side.

John will be deeply missed by his family; wife of 58 years, Arleine, his children; son, Steve (Sherre) Bathke, daughter Diane Searl, and his grandchildren: Steve (Crystal) Bathke, Kala (Dan Foley) Bathke, Billie Jo (Buck Benson) Searl, Ricky Searl, his brother Gilbert Bathke, and Brad Benson.

John was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Mary, his brother Bernard, and sister Hazel Butke.

The family will greet friends and relatives at Fox Cities Funeral & Cremation Services, 3026 Jackson St. Oshkosh, on Friday December 7, 2012, at 3:00 P.M. until the time of the Funeral Service at 5:00 P.M. with Chaplain Ron Urmanski officiating. Private family burial will be held on Saturday December 8, 2012 at Sacred Heart Cemetery
