MRS. JOHN THOMASON

Rachel Theona Rea ( Ray ) was born May 5, 1846, near Freeport, Illinois. She was daughter of Samuel and Rachel Rea ( Ray ).
Left an orphan at the age of 9 days, she found a home with her grandparents near Freeport. The grandparents with the assistance of an aunt and uncle, surrounded the child with the influences and training that stood her so well in hand in later years.
She attended the schools near Freeport, and later took advanced work in the Freeport Academy. In addition to her scholastic work, she broadened her mind with lines of thought that correlated with her school work. She especially loved music. It was at the age of 17 years that Mrs. Thomason united with the Methodist church, and down the long vista of years she remained faithful to the teachings of Christ as she understood them.
On July 4, 1872, she was united in marriage to John Thomason at Mission Creek, Pawnee county, Nebraska. They emigrated to Illinois in 1874 and returned. In 1881 the family came to Kansas.
Mrs. Thomason taught school in Illinois, and also in Kansas. That was in the days when the class room was located in a corner of some rural home, and where the children came from miles to attend classes. Here it was that the knowledge acquired in the Freemont Academy, and her work in music, could be used to good advantage. Teaching through five days of the week, Mrs. Thomason would ride on horseback on Saturdays to the widely scattered homes on the prairies, and instruct the children in music, teaching them to read notes, to sing, and to play the organ or melodian.
Into the Thomason home five children were born, three sons and two daughters. One son Charles, died in infancy. The remaining sons and daughters, with Mr,. Thomason, have enjoyed the blessed comfort of this Mother over a long period of years. Throughout her lifetime with them they found her faithful in every way. Never, as a mother or wife, did she fail a member of her family. One of her outstanding characteristics was loyalty. Loyalty to her husband, to her children, to her church and Sunday school class, and to all with whom she came in contact. Through misfortune, disappointments and seeming grave trails that would have weakened a less enduring personality, this wife and mother carried on undaunted - to the last. Even when life's embers burned low, she thought of her loved ones.
She passed away at her home in Council Grove, January 18, 1934 at the honored age of 87 years, 8 months and 13 days. She is survived by her husband, a son, John H., and a daughter, Mrs. Sol Walgren of the home address, a daughter Mrs. E.R. Dugan of Loveland, Colorado, and a son, George R. Thomason of Great Bend, Kansas; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
