Miriam Russell passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at her home in Hiawassee following a long period of declining health. She was 91 years old.
Miriam Edith Lane was born August 14, 1920 in Daisy, Georgia. She was the eldest child of Luther Ford Lane and Maude Edith (Johnson) Lane. She spent most of her childhood in Savannah, where she met her husband, Carlos Russell. They were married for 58 years. They lived in Savannah, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and North Georgia before settling in Towns County in 1958.
Miriam worked as a substitute teacher in Towns County schools and as a teacher with the first Head Start program in Towns County. She was also an outreach worker for Ninth District Aging program for Towns and Union Counties. For many years Miriam was active in the Towns County Garden Club where she was a life member, and the Order of the Eastern Star, chapter 305. She was an active member of Hiawassee United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos Russell, in 2004; and a brother L.F. Lane Jr. in 1998.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Diann and Dennis Nichols of Hiawassee, son Jimmy Russell of Hayesville, brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Ruth Lane of Hiawassee. Grandchildren are Wade Nichols, Aaron Russell, Katie Nichols Bowman, and Gentry Russell Henry. Great-grandchildren are Valarie Nichols, Arthur and Julianne Bowman, and Culum and Ren Henry.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Hiawassee United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Fuller, Rev. Les Connell, and Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Services were held at 2:00. She was buried at Laurel Hills Memory Garden in Young Harris next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hiawassee United Methodist Church.
