Russell Alfred Bey, age 88 years, 1 month, 8 days, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at Alpena Regional Medical Center in Alpena, Michigan. He was born October 30, 1924, in Rogers City, to Henry and Madaline (Meilke) Bey.
Russell served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Europe from 1943-1945. He was presented with the Purple Heart for injuries received.
On August 17, 1946, Russell was united in marriage with Miss Magdalene Brege.
He worked for United States Steel Calcite plant as a shovel operator from 1946 until his retirement in 1987. Russell and other co-workers organized the first blood bank through Calcite. He was the recording secretary for his union.
Mr. Bey was a representative for special needs children and worked for many years with the United Fund, was a coordinator for the March of Dimes, and was active in different committees including the Fellowship Club at St John Lutheran Church and the Board of Education for St John Lutheran School.
Mr. Bey was a member of St John Lutheran Church and a life member of the Rogers City V.F.W. Post 607.
Mr. Bey is survived by:

…three children,
……Judy (Ed) Watson of San Diego,
……Cindy (Larry) Grulke of Rogers City, and
……Kim (Jeff) Woods of Ypsilanti;
…eight grandchildren;
…eight great-grandchildren; and
…his sister, Alice (Jack) Arlt of Hawks.
He was preceded in death by:
…two children, and,
…… a son, Keith Bey, August 22, 1953-January 05, 2008, and
…… a daughter Debra Ann Bey, April 18, 1958-October 04, 2006; and
…three brothers: Harry Bey, Art Bey, and Earl Bey.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Beck Funeral Home on Thursday, December 13, 2012, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a military tribute at 6:45 followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Visitation will resume at St John Lutheran Church on Friday, December 14, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. through the time of the funeral at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor John Schreiber officiating. The Rogers City V.F.W. Post 607 will accord military honors immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St John Lutheran Church in memory of Russell Bey.
