Dorris attended Southern Methodist University and was a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America. She was an artist and received professional training in both commercial and fine art at the Dallas Art Institute. She and her husband Duane Cleere did not have any children. She died dancing in the arms of her husband of 53 years, enjoying herself on the cruise ship Carnival while in Mexico.
