Palmer, Dec. 2 -- Perley Sprague, elderly Monson State hospital employe[sic], died at the hospital infirmary at 6.36 tonight of injuries received Thursday when he was brutally assaulted and apparently robbed by an assailant who is still at large.
Sprague died without regaining consciousness long enough to reveal any details of the attack or to provide any clews[sic] which would aid in the identification of his attacker. Medical Examiner J. P. Schneider will perform an autopsy at the hospital tomorrow morning at 10.
State Detective Richard Cotter, who has the case under investigation, could not be reached tonight, but it is believed that a murder charge will face Sprague's assailant in the event of his arrest. Sprague, a former resident of Springfield, was in his middle 60's and was known to friends and acquaintances at Springfield and Palmer as "Tex."

Victim of Two Assaults
He was the victim of two assaults in as many weeks. In the first he said he had been knocked unconscious by a man who [illegible]. He had practically recovered from the first assault when the second was made when he was on his way to work in the hospital kitchen.
When Sprague failed to report for work at the usual time early Thursday mrning, the chef sent a patient to call him, believing that he had slept over. The patient discovered Sprague lying unconscious on the floor of the basement of the building, in which the kitchen is located. He had been beaten into insensibility and was suffering from a long cut in the head, which took nine stitches to close. A blunt instrument was used in the attack, police believe. A nearby window was open and it is that Sprague was robbed, police have reason to believe that he was relieved of about $20. Sprague was a native of Damariscotta, Me. He went to Springfield in 1898 and was employed by the Boston & Albany railroad for about 17 years. He made his home at Springfield until he took employment at the Monson State hospital about seven years ago.
He leaves a son, Alton P. Sprague of 409 Newbury street, Springfield; two brothers, William and Water Sprague, and a sister, Mrs Bertha Bowman, all of Coopers Mill, Me.
