King of Norway. Born in Appleton House, Sandringham, Norfolk, England. Reigned as King of Norway from 1957 to 1991. Son of Prince Carl of Denmark, known later as King Haakon VII of Norway and Princess Maud who became the future Queen of Norway. He assumed the name of Crown Prince Olav when his father ascended the throne in 1905 as King Haakon VII. On March 21, 1929 he entered into marriage with Crown Princess Martha Louise of Sweden. Their marriage produced three children: Princess Ragnhild Alexandra, Princess Astrid Maud Ingeborg and Crown Prince Harald who ascended to the throne following the death of his father in 1991. King Olav was an avid sportsman, participating in many ski jumping competitions in Oslo, as well as numerous yachting competitions. His athletic skills earned him a gold medal in sailing at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. On April 9, 1940 Olav and the royal family were forced to flee the country following the German invasion and occupation of Norway. Throughout the war years he traveled extensively throughout the United States, Great Britain and Canada generating support and building forces against the German occupation. Following the war the royal family returned to Norway with Haakon reassuming the throne. Olav succeeded to the throne following his father's death on September 21, 1957 and continued to rule for 33 years until his death in Oslo at age 87. Cause of death: Complications from stroke.
