John W. Bensley, 67, chief of police in Delaware Water Gap, died Saturday in his East Stroudsburg home. He was the husband of Cleona (Anthony) Bensley.
He began as a police officer in Delaware Water Gap about 19 years ago and was named chief of police in 1988. Before that he was a deputy sheriff in Monroe County for eight years. He was a constable for the 2nd Ward in East Stroudsburg since 1964.
Before working in law enforcement, he was a produce manager at A&P; grocery stores in Stroudsburg and Bushkill for 33 years, retiring in 1978.
Born in Dingmans Ferry, Pike County, he was a son of the late Percy and Jennie (Schoonover) Bensley.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors: Wife; daughter, Anna Mae Barton of Stroudsburg, and brothers, Walter P., Herbert, and Lester R., all of Bushkill.
