The son of Samuel & Catherine (Moyer) Spidle, in 1860 he was a cabinet maker presumably living in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not in that census, and the 1863 draft registration puts him in Derry Township, Dauphin County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Hummelstown July 31, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. C, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.

He married Barbara lnu. >=1870 and fathered May Alberta (b./d. 1872) and Mary L. (b. 1873, d. 1874). Barbara died in 1876, and he married Jennie L. Jacks March 6, 1883, fathering Edgar Ray (b. 08/01/80) and Carrie A. (b. 07/12/90). John does not appear in another census until 1920, by which time he was a widower. Cause of death is listed as "senility."
