John's services were held in 1949; he died as the result of a construction accident while he was part of the Army of Occupation. He was married to Kate Honey on 28 September 1940 in Lincoln Co., TN. Surviving him were his mother and father. They had divorced and his mother was listed as Mrs. A.F. Smith. Surviving siblings included sisters Mrs. Jennings Pamplin, Mrs. Charles McGeHee, Mr. L.R. McAlister (all of Lincoln Co.), Mrs. G. D. Bass (Tullahoma), and Mrs. Ruth Milstead (Memphis), as well as a half-brother, George Milstead (Howell).
