The Rev. Louis R. Beckwith, retired pastor and beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully December 24, 2004, at his home in Gorham, Maine. The Rev. Beckwith was led into ministry, service and work for social justice by his faith in God and his love for others. He taught those around him by his example that faith is more complicated than certainty and controversy is the sign that you are making an important and a significant impact. Born in rural Peticodiac, New Brunswick, Canada, into a large family, Rev. Beckwith and his family moved to Boston when he was 4 years old. He grew up knowing hard times and hard work. He was baptized at Melrose’s First Baptist Church on New Year’s Eve, when his mother agreed to walk with him through the snow so he could publicly proclaim his faith. He attended the Bentley School of Business, but his life changed course when he was called into a life of ministry. Rev. Beckwith responded to the call to World War II and joined the Army, serving in Company D of the 3187th Signal Service Battalion in the European Theater. He met Dorothy Jane Hilton at church in Carthage, Mo., while in training at Camp Crowder. They were married for 58 years. Rev. Beckwith’s education included time at Horton Academy, Acadia University and Acadia Divinity School in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He graduated with a Master of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School in 1953 and studied at Oxford University as well. While at Acadia, he preached every Sunday in a circuit of five churches and later served as the youth minister at the First Baptist Church in Wolfville.
