Tragedy occurred at Foot of Kalamazoo Ave, Sunday AM
The second fatal accident within three weeks occurred on the Grand Trunk right-of-way in Vicksburg last Sunday morning when Lewis J. Peterman drove his car, a Ford Model A, off the road at the end of Kalamazoo avenue and onto the tracks where he was hit by a passenger train.
The accident occurred at 3:30 o'clock Sunday morning after Peterman had returned from Kalamazoo. The car was stuck squarely in the center and carried about 500 feet to the crossing just west of the depot. Lewis was the only passenger and was still alive when the train crew and station operator Clarence Myers reached the car. He was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance and died about 10 minutes after admittance.
The train was No. 6 of the Grand Trunk east bound and was slowing down for the stop it always makes here to pick up mail and express. It was evident from the marks that Peterman tried desperately to get his car off the tracks and was prevented by the high rails. The train was held about 55 minutes until Coroner Cobb arrived and cleared them. The Engineer was C. Lang of Battle Creek and the Conductor W. E. Merrifield of Port Huron.
The car was a complete wreck. All the undercarriage of the auto was broken and sprung when the engine pushed it across the crossing at Richardson avenue. Peterman was 50 years old. The first fatal accident occurred on April 17 to Mr. Charles Worthington, who was also struck by a train.
Mr. Peterman was well-known in this community, having lived here for the past 14 years and had been employed by the Kalamazoo Paper Company for the past 15 years.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Ilah, two daughters, Mrs. Nina Collins, Vicksburg, and Miss Alvena Peterman, now of Washington D. C. and one son, Donald, his mother, Mrs. Anna Peterman, Vicksburg, also 3 cousins and other relatives and a wide acquaintance of friends.
The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Critz Funeral Home. Rev. T. H. Leamon of the M. E. Church will officiate. Burial will take place in the Vicksburg Cemetery.
