Manufacturer. Born and educated in St. Louis, Otto graduated from Washington University. Afterwards, he went abroad to pursue an advanced course of study in a noted school of technology in Stuttgart. Returning to St. Louis, he accepted a position in his father's establishment, where he began a careful study of the processes of manufacturing beer. Later he continued this process by studying the science of brewing at Chicago, Milwaukee and New York City. Returning to St. Louis, he took over the Stifel Brewery. The brewery later became part of the St. Louis Brewing Association, of which Stifel was president. He became president of the Union Brewing Company after helping form the company, and later changed its name to Otto F. Stifel's Union Brewing Company. When this company stopped the manufacture of liquors it was changed to a factory for making oleomargarine, and continued under the supervision of Stifel. He was also the president of the East St. Louis Ice and Cold Storage Company and owned a coal mine in Pocahontas, Illinois. Financial difficulties due to prohibition led to his suicide in 1920.
