Mr. John Wesley Bryant was born in Columbia County, Florida, on November 10, 1844, the son of John and Miriam (Osteen) Bryant. At the age of 12 he came to Polk County with his parents and at the age of 15 enlisted as a Private in the Confederate States Army as a member of Captain Pyle's Company. He later served as a member of Captain Lesley's Company. His Civil War military service also included serving in Col. Munnerlyn's Cavalry in what is known as the famous "Florida Cow Cavalry" which was responsible for providing food supplies for the Confederate Army during the final years of the war.

For 60 years he lived in Orangedale, north of Lakeland, and in his later years settled and became a resident in the city of Lakeland.

Probably no man in Polk County, Florida, was more prominently identified with its affairs during this period of time than John Wesley Bryant, who for 68 years was a resident of the county and a leader in its political and financial circles. He was a successful cattleman rancher, businessman and investor, which led him to become one of the county's leading financiers. He served as the vice- president and chairman of the board at the First National Bank in Lakeland.

John Wesley Bryant represented Polk County for several years in the Florida Legislature and was the fist State Senator from Polk County after it became a senatorial district. He was an active member of the Masonic Order and was the last surviving charter member of the Ebenezer Lodge of Kathleen, Florida.

Mr. Bryant was married three times: his first wife was Miriam (Hancock) Bryant, his second wife was Julia A. (Holly) Bryant, and his third wife was Ruth (Robinson) Bryant. He was also the proud father of 7 children:
Manuel Alonzo, Lezora Jane Texas, James Lafayette, Georgia V., Alice Levenia, Katherine Elva, and Julie May Bryant.
