Mr. George F. Longshore, 58, of Elkins Park, Pa., died Saturday, 11/14/2004 of a gunshot wound to the chest at Washington Hospital Center in Washington.
He had been a health-care executive and leader of a spiritual support group.
Mr. Longshore was shot by a robber after leaving a wedding reception at St. Francis Hall at the Franciscan Monastery in the Brookland neighborhood of Northeast Washington. The executive was walking toward his car with his wife Joanne; his daughter, Janelle Kilinski, and her husband when they were accosted by 2 men. Though the family gave the assailants money, Mr. Longshore was shot and the others were pistol-whipped. Police are still seeking the robbers (as of 11/18/2004).
Since 1999, Mr. Longshore had been vice president of human resources at Catholic Health East, a hospital system based in Newtown Square, Pa. He had previously been president of Longshore + Simmons, Inc., an executive-search and health-care consulting firm in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., which he co-founded as Fulton, Longshore & Associates in 1979. He was the author of a book, Top Docs: Managing the Search for Physician Leaders, and published many articles on health-care management.
Mr. Longshore was a founding member of the de Sales Network in Philadelphia, Pa., a group of Catholic laity who meet for spiritual support.
His longtime assistant, Linda Brown, said the network guided her boss' life. "Above all, family came first," she said. In his business dealings, "George was the kindest and most considerate person I've ever worked for. He was always trying to help people to counsel them and connect them when they're out of work with someone who can help."
Mr. Longshore grew up in Port Richmond and graduated from Northeast Catholic High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from LaSalle University and a master's degree in business administration from Temple University. Before founding his own firm, he worked in employee relations for several companies.
In 1972, he married Joanne Constantino, whom he had met at the Jersey Shore.
Her brother, Joseph Constantino said Mr. Longshore enjoyed fine wine, travel, summers at his vacation home in Ocean City, NJ and cooking soup and pasta dishes.
Mr. Constantino said his brother-in-law was looking forward to retiring in a few months to do consulting and spend time with his family.
Mr. Longshore served on the board of Pennsylvania Hospital and was chairman of the planning and marketing committee of the de Sales Spirituality Center in Washington.
In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Alicia Flannery; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
