He may have been drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, but given that he was not yet eighteen years of age (despite declaring he was), it is more likely he enlisted as a substitute. Unfortunately, his compiled military service record is mum on this issue. However he got there, he mustered into federal service at Camp McClure, Chambersburg, November 1, 1862, and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.
He married Margaret (Martha in several of her children's death certificates) Rebecca "Beckie" Kriner December 15, 1869, in Carlisle, and fathered Laura Eby (b. 02/12/72 - married Ralph C. Crow), Minnie Florence (b. 12/21/73 - married Jacob Calvin Waggoner), William Henry (b. 01/28/75, d. 02/05/75), Ida May (b. 05/11/76 - married Alfred Clayton Swarner), Anna Rebecca (b. 04/05/78 - married Phillip W. Snyder), Emma Linda (b. 10/21/79 - married Edward Henry Hunt), Edward Walter (b. 03/29/81), Franklin Monroe (b. 05/27/83), Bessie Belle (b. 10/23/85 - married Warren Krise Wickard), Grace E. (b. 06/06/88, d. 03/31/89), Carrie Elsie (b. 04/02/90 - married Roy Ernest Jacoby), Edna Rhoda (b. 06/20/92 - married John Henry Boyer), and Lawrence David (b. 01/09/96). Beckie died in 1896, apparently from the effects of childbirth, and he married Anna E. Mell November 27, 1903, in Camden, New Jersey.
In 1899, he lived in Caprivi, Cumberland County.
