Richard Halverson, 59, of New Ulm, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Brighton Township with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 300 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30-8 a.m.Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Richard is survived by his wife, Joyce Halverson of New Ulm; mother, Marjorie Halverson of New Ulm; sons, Jason Halverson and special friend, Rachele Johnson, of Sleepy Eye, David Halverson and special friend, Erica Kietzer, of New Ulm; granddaughter, Haley Nachreiner of Courtland; sister, Jane Starz of New Ulm; brother-in-law, Luther Westad of Vining; and by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Robert; brother-in-law, Jerry; and sister-in-law, Barb.
Richard Brian Halverson was born Dec. 18, 1952 in New Ulm to Robert and Marjorie (Ketcham) Halverson. He attended New Ulm High School and graduated with the class of 1970. After high school, he attended Alexandria Technical College. In November of 1972, Richard joined the United States Air Force and served until 1975. After his service, Richard furthered his studies at South Central Technical School in Mankato. On June 30, 1973 Richard was united in marriage to Joyce Westad in Parkers Prairie. He farmed full time from 1976 to the present and worked part time at Kraft Foods from 2001 to early 2012. Richard was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, the American Legion Post 300 in Lafayette, where he served as a Past Commander, the Hub Club in New Ulm, the C-Store Coffee Club, and was a member of the Bernadotte 4H Club and the New Ulm FFA in his youth. Richard loved the land and had recently began raising grass-fed Dexter cattle. He loved red tractors and spending time tractor pulling and restoring antique tractors. Richard also enjoyed hunting, traveling, camping, and spending time with his friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Legion Post 300 in Lafayette.
