Obituary from Eugene Register-Guard, 12/14/2012:

Elva Mae McGuire, the youngest and last of nine siblings, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on December 6, 2012, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

She was born on January 8, 1923 to Walter and Dora Stone in Pleasant Valley Township, Kansas. As a young girl Elva did her share of chores on the family farm helping her family endure the Dust Bowl. In the 1930s the family left the farm for Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Elva attended Klamath Union High School while working part time at a bakery and ice cream parlor. There she met her next-door neighbor and lifelong sweet heart, Walter Verne McGuire. They married a few days after her graduation.

In 1947, Elva and Verne moved to Eugene and raised two daughters, . . . . Though from humble beginnings, they eventually prospered in the lumber industry and in 1969 built their dream home on top of 70 acres in west Eugene. Verne died in September of 1997.

Elva kept a spotless home and was a great cook. She served many years on the election board in Santa Clara and was a March of Dimes volunteer. She and Verne belonged to Shadow Hills Country Club enjoying golfing and friends. A voracious reader with a sharp mind, Elva solved the Times crossword puzzle daily and loved pinochle. Her laugh was contagious.

Elva loved the ocean and spent lots of time at the Oregon coast and in Hawaii. Her greatest love, however, was family. She leaves behind 2 daughters; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who will miss her greatly. A celebration of her life will be held in January.
