Clara Eliza Swafford, daughter of Isaiah and Mary Swafford, was born December 5, 1865 , near Pleasantville, Ia., and departed this life October 23, 1950, at her home in Republic, at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 23 days.

She came to Kansas with her parents at the age of 14 and they located on a farm southeast of Republic in Union township.

On April 23, 1882, she was united in marriage to Cornelius Roscoe Johnson and to this union five children were born. Four of the children are living, a daughter having died in infancy.

She and her husband spent almost all of their 59 years of married life in the Republic community. Following his death on March 24, 1941, she moved into town where she has since resided.

Through her lifetime she has endeared herself to many by her thoughtfulness and many acts of kindness. She was a kind and loving wife and mother and her home and family were always her greatest interest.

On October 8, 1894, she joined the Church of Christ. The past few years she attended and took an active interest in the local Evangelical United Brethren church.

She is survived by her two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Nina Yeager of Clark, Colo., Leslie W. Johnson of Republic, Mrs. Ethel Harvey of Superior, Neb., and Earle R. Johnson of Indio, Cal.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 26, at 2:30 o'clock in the Evangelical United Brethren church in Republic. Interment was in Union Valley cemetery.
