In Memoriam
Jessie McDowell was born in London, England Aug. 4, 1836, died at her late home, Delphos, Kansas Feb. 6, 1912, aged seventy-five years, six months and two days.
She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth McDowell and was united in marriage to Archibald Barnes in Brooklyn, New York, March 17, 1859, to whom were born nine children, seven of whom survive her and who with their father followed her to her last resting place in the beautiful Delphos Cemetery.
In 1879 Mr. and Mrs. Barnes and children moved from the East to this locality and have resided here since; suffering the privations of the pioneer days, but eventually reaping the reward of thrift and labor, in a life of comfort, during their latter days.
Those left to mourn are the husband, Archibald Barnes, Edward P. Barnes, Okana, Oklahoma; Archibald Barnes Jr., Hobart, Oklahoma; Mrs. Lavina Canfield, Holly Colorado; Mrs. Matilda Trask, Humphrey, Missouri; Mrs. Martha Marler, Delphos, Kansas and Mrs. Jessie Rice, Delphos, Kansas; Mrs. Elizabeth Wright, Hobart, Oklahoma; 29 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and a host of friends in the community in which she lived so many years.
Early in life she gave her heart to Christ and united with the M.E. Church in Massachusetts afterward bringing her card and depositing it in the M.E. Church in Delphos. She has lived a consistent Christian through all these years. On March 17, 1909 this couple celebrated their golden wedding at which happy event all of the children were at home together for the first time in twenty-five years. They lived in wedded bliss 52 years, 10 months and 15 days.
