CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Gaye Holshouser Burns, 70, of Charlotte, NC, passed away November 30, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center.

A lifelong area resident, she was born in Concord on May 26, 1942 to the late Herman and Emma (Cline) Holshouser. Mrs. Burns graduated from Concord High School, Class of 1960. She then earned her undergraduate degree from Catawba College and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Appalachian State University. As a dedicated educator, she taught English at Albemarle Senior High School, Independence High School, and Myers Park High School. She concluded her thirty-five year career in the testing department at Myers Park.

Following her retirement, Mrs. Burns was an active volunteer in her church and community. She was a long time member of Carmel Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and was a member and teacher of the Knowing the Word Sunday School Class and the Women's Circle. She also enjoyed leading youth mission trips. For 18 years, Mrs. Burns volunteered at Presbyterian Hospital and, for five years, at Billy Graham Library. During elections, she served as a judge in her local precinct.

Mrs. Burns loved to travel with her family and explored four continents. She was also an avid supporter of the UNC Tar Heels and the Carolina Panthers.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by her husband Herbert.

She is survived by her daughter Susan Covington and son-in-law Matthew Covington.

A service to celebrate the life of Gaye Burns will be held at Carmel Presbyterian Church at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, December 8th with the Reverend Jim Szeyller presiding. A reception will follow in the Church's Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226, or to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 5950 Fairview Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.
