Charles E. Hawley (Oct. 13, 1951–Sept. 29, 2011)

Upon getting to know Chuck Hawley, a business associate joked that he hoped God didn't judge on a curve. Amen to that. He was devout, kind, cheerful, humble, positive, compassionate, genuine, gifted in leadership and intellect. Chuck lived his personal life and professional career as an ever deepening reflection of the faith journey he embraced in his youth. All done with a fun spirit, with a ready sense of appreciation for the joys of life, be it a cruise in the Mediterranean, plays in Ashland, Disney rides with grandkids or a great meal with a fine wine. With a soul-deep drive to use his gifts to work in health care in order to serve God by serving those in need, especially the elderly and the poor.

He was born in Oakland, CA to Bill and Betty Hawley and grew up with his siblings on the East Coast and in England during his father's career as a Navy officer. The family later returned to their home state of Washington, and Chuck graduated in 1969 from Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood, WA. Active in debate, track and student government. A graduate of Seattle Pacific College, he became the executive director of the Washington Association of Homes for the Aging for non-profit nursing homes. During this time he also earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Washington and later taught classes there in long-term care policy.

In 1987, what is now Providence Health and Services hired Chuck to bring his expertise in long term care to the multi-state health care system. As Vice President of Long-Term Care and Continuum Development, Chuck was one of the visionaries who brought the concept of assisted living and other innovative programs to the State of Washington and helped to change how care for the elderly is provided. Advocacy on a state and national level also numbered among his areas of concern, and he served on various task forces on health care reform and other issues. Later he served as Vice President of Government Affairs for Providence and was Vice President of Public Affairs at the time of his retirement in December, 2009.

In January of 2010 Chuck began a new role with Providence as a member of Providence Ministries which now sponsors Providence Health and Services in lieu of the Sisters of Providence religious community. In 2011 he became president of the sponsor board. In 2010 Chuck also completed a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies at Seattle University in preparation to serve as a chaplain in long term care settings, which he did once a week at Providence Mount St. Vincent as a volunteer. He loved it.

Then, early in 2011, he had a reoccurrence of a rare cancer of the cranial nerves that had manifested itself in 2003 and 2009. This time no form of treatment would grant him and his beloved wife and family more time together. With strength of character, trust in Providence and a gracious spirit, he accepted what would unfold in this last work and witness of his life.

For what he did and what he was, Chuck has been honored by the American Association of Homes for the Aging, the Sisters of Providence, Senior Services of King County and others. This summer the Providence Health and Services Board of Directors named the system's conference center in Renton the Hawley Center in honor of his "courageous and loving ministry."

Chuck is survived by his wife, Gail; his son Charlie and (Casey) Hawley; his daughter, Sarah Nelson; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Todd and Jennifer Loiselle; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Marc and Perry Loiselle; and grandchildren, Kyle, Isaac, Rachel, Ryan, Evan, and Lorena; with another little one soon to arrive. Other survivors at the time of his death are his brother, Fred Hawley; his sister Chris (Bill) Hoffman; his sister Nan (John) Lorge; and his former wife, Patty Binkerhoff; and several nieces; and nephews. The family would like to express their sorrow of the passing of Chuck's mother, Betty Hawley on October 12, 2011.

The family would also like to express their profound gratitude to the amazing Providence care team who enabled Chuck to spend his last days at home, in the midst of much love.

There will be a funeral Mass at St. Jude Parish in Redmond, WA on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
