From Richard Tourangeau, ex-ranger, retired: Frank Leon Miller was killed while serving aboard the USS Cassin Young (DD793) several miles east of Okinawa on July 30, about 3:30 am. The ship was hit by a kamikaze and 22 sailors were killed near the forward, starboard portion.
The Cassin Young was the last destroyer hit by a kamikaze during the war and is now a museum ship, part of Boston National Historical Park. She is docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard across the Harbor from Boston's North End, about one hundred yards from the USS Constitution at Pier One. Park rangers give tours during visitor seasons. A plaque honoring all those killed hangs at the place of impact. The ship can be Googled via the Park or the volunteers website for more information.
