LIFE'S LABOR ENDS AT AGE OF 80
John Hersey, Old Resident And Well Known Citizen Answers Final Summons Sunday Morning
John W. Hersey, an old and well known resident of the city, passed away Sunday morning at 3:30 o'clock at the home of his son, Frank, on the hill. For several days past is was known that Mr. Hersey's condition was serious and his children who were at his bedside realized that his life was slowly ebbing and were prepared when the final summons came. He has been sick for some six weeks following a slight stroke of paralysis. Since then he never rallied his strength but grew weaker day by day until Sunday morning when the tired body found its rest and the soul passed from its tenement of clay into the new life eternal.
John W. Hersey was born at Minot, Maine, August 4th, 1831 and at the time of his death was aged 80 years two months and eleven days.
May 6, 1860, at Dover, Maine, he was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Crockett, to whom were born eleven children as follows: Frank of Savanna, Emily and Albert, both deceased, George of Rockford, Charles of Savanna, Jennie, deceased, Mrs. Lucy Billings, Rockford, William, Savanna, Mrs. Annette Klein, deceased, Mrs. Grace Smith, Clinton, and Mrs. Myrtle Price, Swansea, Arizona. The wife and mother died March 4, 1892. He has also one brother living, Moses H. Hersey of Foxcroft, Maine.
Mr. Hersey and family came to Illinois in 1870 and located on a farm south of Belvidere, in Boone County. Later he went to Minnesota, and finally came to Savanna in 1892 which has since been his home. By occupation he was a carpenter and was always an industrious man, an upright citizen, honest in his dealings and one whose was good as his bond. He was a man who read a great deal and also an extensive traveler and was well versed on all important events of the day and it was interesting to converse with him. He was a kindly man with always a friendly greeting for one and all and his familiar figure will be missed from our streets. He was devoted to his children and in his taking away they have been bereft of a good friend. They made his last days as comfortable as possible and have the consolation of knowing that all is well with him.
Mr. Hersey belonged to but one order, the Masons.
Friends sympathize with the children in their sorrow, and while the parting brings a pang of sadness they cannot but realize that he enjoyed the full measure of his years and saw his children grow to womanhood and manhood and was ready to go when the summons came.
