Rudolph August Rasmussen, son of Lauritz and Maren Rasmussen, was born February 19, 1863, in Norway, Europe. In June of 1866 his parents brought him and his brother and sister to the United States. They landed at Quebec and came by train to Chicago, Ill. The brother and sister died a short time after arriving in Chicago and another brother, born in Chicago, died in infancy.

The Scandinavian Agricultural Society was organized in 1868 at Chicago, for the purpose of forming a colony to settle in Republic County, Kansas. His father came to New Scandinavia, later changed to Scandia, in January 1870, to operate a saw mill for the society. In May 1870, his mother brought him and a sister by train to Junction City. They were met there by a man with a covered wagon. After traveling three days they arrived at Lars Melby's farm three miles south of Scandia, the farm being the location of the saw mill.

In the summer of 1870 he attended a three months subscription school, called the Colony House, and the first school in Scandia.

His father took a homestead in 1870 and built a house that had rock floors. The family moved into this house the first of March, 1871. The parents lived on this farm for 53 years.

He was united in marriage to Christine Sjoholm on April 13, 1892. That was 60 years ago. To this union six children were born: Mabel Lenora, Frederick Bernard, Ralph Edward, Amanda Laura, John Leslie and Charles Arthur.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Rasmussen lived on the farm in Union Township. Besides farming he worked as a carpenter.

In February 1926 he retired and he and his wife moved to Scandia where they have lived until this present time.

He was preceded in death by his mother who died August 1, 1902 and his father on February 5, 1924. Also two sisters and five brothers, and a son Frederick, who died in 1918.
