Charles enlisted as a private in Co. C, 145th Pennsylvania Infantry, on Aug. 14, 1862, for a three year term of service, and was mustered in on Aug. 26, 1862, in Erie, PA. At some point during his service he was promoted to Corporal. He was captured and made a prisoner on June 16, 1864, during the 'Siege of Petersburg', Petersburg, VA, and was released on Apr. 29, 1865. He was honorably discharged on May 30, 1865, in Harrisburg, PA.
When Charles was taken prisoner in the Civil War, he was incarcerated in the infamous Andersonville Prison, near Andersonville, Georgia.
Charles was a patient/inmate at the Michigan Soldiers Home, in Grand Rapids, Kent, MI; admitted sometime between 1900 and 1910, and remained there until his death in 1921.
