He was the son of William Sherman and Bess Cornett Carpenter, the husband of Eugenia Bisset Carpenter.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

John was a true Renaissance Man. He had numerous hobbies, including:

Amateur Astronomy - he had an observatory on his property housing a telescope he constructed himself.

Tennis - he was quite good and had his own court.

Banjo Picking - I gave Johnny banjo lessons about 35 years ago. In spite of the fact that he waited until he was in his 50s to attempt to play he became a fairly proficient player. He worked at it diligently.

Photography - This was perhaps his most important hobby. He used both the 35mm format and the "box camera" format as well. He took large format pictures of all the courthouses in Kentucky and they were published as "Kentucky Courthouses". Copies of this book can be found for sale on the Web.

Johnny was an exceptionally intelligent man and a great friend.

He is missed.
