Suggested edit: Obituary published in the Adams County Free Press (Corning, Iowa) on Thursday, April 27, 1939:

Marion Elizabeth Thomas, a pioneer of Adams county, died Monday morning, April 24, after only one week of illness, aged 95 years, one month and 25 days. Mrs. Thomas had been quite active for one her age until a short time before her death and a week ago was stricken with a painful illness. She had made her home with her son, Charles and family in Nodaway township and she was tenderly cared for there until the last. Mrs. Thomas has lived a long active life full of the adventure of pioneering, noting the changes which have come with the years and adapting herself to those changes. Her zest for living was unusual and she loved keeping up with modern ways and because of this her life has been full.

Marion Elizabeth Flanders, daughter of Lyman and Lavina Flanders, was born February 29, 1844, in Vermont. When Marion was two years old the family moved to Monroe county, Iowa and later to Nodaway township, Adams county. She recalled many interesting events of the early days – days when it took a six oxen hitch to dig up the hazel brush on the virgin soil to clear for planting. She was married to J. J. Thomas in 1876 and was the mother of three sons and three daughters. She also reared ten stepchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas resided in Corning for 18 years where the former was employed and when his health began to fail they moved to Mt. Etna where he died April 23, 1904.

The children who survive are: Eva Getty of Sioux City; Etta Yarrington, Mt. Etna; Charles Thomas, Nodaway township; Ellen Marsh of Bedford; Frank and George of Chicago, Ill.

Mrs. Thomas was one whose hands were never idle. Since there was no longer a spinning wheel or a loom to keep them busy, she found pleasure in more modern duties and especially liked quilting. She was a good mother and held the love of her children through the years or progress and change. She was blessed with excellent health and met life with an eager spirit which kept her young.

Funeral services were held at the church in Brooks Wednesday afternoon, April 26, at 2 p. m. Rev. Z. M. Bressler and Rev. William Overhulser were in charge. Burial was made in Mr. Etna cemetery.
