Freeman H. ‘Bud' Betz
Former director of GMC Radiologic Technology Freeman H. "Bud" Betz, 78, of 9 Deerfield Drive, Elysburg, and formerly of Riverside, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at his residence. He was born Oct. 9, 1934, in Danville, the only child of the late Freeman S. and Lorrene Snyder Betz. He graduated from Shamokin Area High School in 1952, where he played football for four years. He also graduated from Geisinger School of Radiological Technology as a registered technologist in 1956. Bud graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science degree in radiological technology. He was certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and was a member of the American Society of Radiological Technologists. He was past president of Local District 5 of Radiological Technologists and the PA Society of Radiological Technologists. Bud was employed by Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, as Program Director of Radiologic Technology in 1973 until his retirement in 1997. He was a 40-year member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Danville, where he served several terms as deacon and elder. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Elysburg Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and on the Pastoral Search Committee. An avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Betz enjoyed golfing, Penn State University football, Pittsburgh Steelers football and high school football and softball. He enjoyed playing softball for the Geisinger Medical Center team. Bud enjoyed hunting. He also enjoyed camping at the New Jersey Shore and Poe Valley State Park. His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren play sports. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy J. Hill Betz, whom he married March 19, 1955, at Oak Grove Methodist Church, Paxinos. He is also survived by two sons: Chris Betz and his children: Megan, Kelsey and Derek of Manassas, Va., and Carl Betz, his wife Donna and their children: Samuel, Kendra and Morgan of Danville. Also surviving are two daughters: Allyson Estes and her husband Tracy and their children: Myleah, Miles and Clara of Asbury Park, N.J., and Lee A. Gordner and her husband Jeffrey and their daughter Lydia of Danville. Also surviving are two step-grandsons: Jeremy and Jered Gordner; one great-grandson, Aiden Betz, and one step-great-grandson, Emmett Gordner. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Bud's Life to be held Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Elysburg Presbyterian Church, 320 W. Valley Ave., Elysburg, with the Reverend Matthew Young officiating. Burial will be private at Oak Grove Methodist Cemetery, Paxinos. The family will receive friends directly after the service at the church.
