Civil War Union Soldier. He served during the Civil War in Company F, 1st Vermont Volunteer Calvary, rising from Private to Captain and commander. He enlisted in June 1861, and was not mustered out until August 1865.

He was brevetted Major, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "distinguished and meritorious services" and Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services in the field"
