Famed British 20th century botanist. Educated in Dulwich before taking the Natural Sciences Tripos at Girton College, Cambridge. She established the Botany Department at Westfield in 1906 when she was appointed Lecturer in Botany, a post she held until 1914. She returned as Head of the Department in 1918, and maintained that appointment after her marriage to Percy John Delf Smith in 1928, remaining until her retirement in 1948. She continued her association with Westfield as President of the Westfield College Association, 1950-1955, and subsequently as an Honorary Fellow, appointed in 1955. Her research interest was the physiology of saltmarsh plants and succulents. She wrote many important books on a range of botany subjects which included many discoveries.
