Harry Leon Atkins Jr., 86, passed on from this world Nov. 28, 2012, with his wife by his side.

He was born on May 25, 1926, in Parma, Mich., to Harry Leon Atkins Sr. and Monabelle (Ball) Atkins. He grew up in Parma and graduated Parma High School as salutatorian in 1943.


He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1944-1945. He attended Jackson Business University and met his bride, Joan Smalley. They were married on April 19, 1946.

He went to work for his father-in-law as an accountant and later bought the dealership in Concord, Mich. This was the beginning of a 63-year career in the car industry, retiring from Dave Kring Chevrolet-Cadillac in September 2009.

On May 20, 2006, he married Vickie Skop.

He is survived by his wife, Vickie, and three daughters, Celia (JP) Polizzoto of Tucson, Ariz., Lori J. Atkins of Edgewood, Md., Wendy Jensen of Manhattan, Kan.; stepdaughter, Jessica Skop, of Muskegon, Mich,; grandchildren, Derek, Michelle, Courtney, Tyler and Taylor; nephew, Harry (Billie) Hanes; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; son-in-law, Steven Jensen; sisters, Lola and Bobbie; and his nephew, Dale Hanes.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. today, Friday, Nov. 30, with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David Behling officiating, all at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Boyne Falls.

Interment will take place in Concord, Mich., in May of 2013.
