Mr. William Witcher Childress, 68, went to be with his Lord at Danville Memorial Hospital on March 11, 1938.

He was a prominent farmer in the Mt. Cross Road Community and had lived in Pittsylvania County, VA his entire life.

He married first wife Mary Alice Wells on December 20, 1888 and she was predeceased by him.

He married second wife Madie Ellen Mitchell in 1920, who survives. Also survived are five of their children Josephine Childress, Kate Childress, Emerson Childress, Elsie Childress and Rebecca Childress.

He was also predeceased by three children of his second wife John Childress and Bernard R Childress and Joyce Childress.

He is survived by fourteen children of his first wife Mrs. W T Hyler, Mrs. G E Tarpley, Mrs. T L Moore, Mrs. W J Hyler, Mrs. T L Soyars, Mrs. P A Tarpley, Mrs. Howard Hyler, Mrs. C P Aaron, Mrs. L J Scearce, J E Childress, H B Childress and H A Childress all of Pittsylvania County; P B Childress of Crews, VA and Jack Childress of Newport News, VA.

He also leaves 75 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren

Funeral serves were conducted by Reverend E M Richardson, Jr at his residence at Mt. Cross. The Brosville Council of Juniors held services at the graveside. He was buried in the Childress Family Cemetery.
