Samuel was the oldest child of John and Sarah Harris Gannon. He was a blacksmith by trade and served as an artificer with Co. D, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery from 1862 to 1866. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg while serving in Louisiana. He was one of five brothers (Columbus, John, Daniel and George). that fought to preserve the union. He died while living at the National Soldiers home in Marion, IN. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.
