Enlisted at Montgomery as a private in Co. K of the 9th infantry. He is described as 18 years old, 5 feet 6 inches, fair complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. He lists his place of birth as Colchester, Vermont. Prior to enlisting, Theodore worked as a farmer to help support his mother Harriet and sisters, Frances and Lucinda. His father, Seth Carey, died in Colchester on May 7, 1852, at the age of 39.
On November 10, 1864, Theodore became ill and went into the hospital. He died December 23, 1864 at Fort Monroe, Virginia, of diarrhea and convulsions.

Inventory at time of death: 1 cap, 1 great coat, 1 pair trowsers, 1 flannel drawers, 2 flannel shirts, 1 pair shoes, 1 pair of socks, 1 pocketbook, 1 vest and $5.30.
