HATTIE VAN ARKEL
Henrietta "Hattie" Van Arkel, 100, of Ottumwa and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 1989 at the home of her daughter in Ottumwa. She was born Jan. 29, 1889 at Leighton, the daughter of John and Henrietta Brandt Grandia.
She was married to William Van Arkel, Jan. 1, 1916, at Pella. He died June 5, 1954. They farmed in the Cedar-Oskaloosa area until 1952 when they moved into Oskaloosa. She moved to Ottumwa in 1973 to live with her daughter, Maxine Wilson.
She is survived by one son, Cliff Van Arkel of Oskaloosa; two daughters, Maxine Wilson of Ottumwa, and Marjorie Rouw of Hedrick; nine grandchildren; one step-grandson; 11 great-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, and five sisters.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1989 at 10 a.m. at the Newman Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Rev. David Troxler officiating. Burial was in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa.
The Newman Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
