The Death of Mrs. Slater.
Died, in this city on the 10th inst.. Mrs. Ann L. Slater, widow of the late Hon. R. D. Slater, Sr., in the 62nd year of her age. Her funeral took place at the Presbyterian Church, on last Friday, attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives. The funeral sermon, an excellent and impressive discourse, was preachcd by the Rev. S. N. Willson.
Ann L. Slater, was born in Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland, on the 24th of June, 1810; was the fourth child born to Thomas and Deborah Disney. She was united in marriage with Richard D. Slater, on the 14th of May, 1835, with whom she lived until his death, March 3d, 1874. She was the mother of eleven children—ten sons and one daughter; six of whom preceded her to the grave, leaving to mourn her loss four sons and the daughter. She settled in Dearborn county, Indiana, in the year 1838, where she continued to reside until her death.
She was possessed of great energy and will power, and endowed with many ennobling traits of character, that stamped their impress upon every action through life. To her family she was a loving and affectionate mother, whose labor of life was devoted to their welfare; guarding with filial care and devotion their every interest; at all times seeking to impress upon their minds the spirit of the true, pure and Christian principles that ever guided and directed her course through life. Kind and unostentatious in her intercourse with her fellow mortals, she sought and desired only that reward which is obtained in living and practicing those golden precepts: "Do unto others as ye would they should do unto you," and "Love thy neighbor as thyself." The friendships she formed in life were lasting and permanent, and will resist the power of the cold and obliterating hand of death. And the record of the many acts of charity, and deeds of love and kindness to the suffering and afflicted will live after her; and as the gentle dews of Heaven will nourish and keep alive the flowers of gratitude and remembrance that shall bloom above her grave, and will be carried as trophies in the hands of the interceding angels, and laid at the feet of the master, to be set as bright jewels in the crown of eternal life that awaits her beyond the tomb.
Her life was one of toil, pain, and suffering. Sickness, sorrow and death come often to chill and darken the Joys and pleasures of life. She bowed in humble deference to the will of the Master with no words of complaint, strengthened by the grace of his glorious promise that the time was not far distant when she should listen to the .voices of the loved ones that awaited her coming, and with them enter into the joys of the life everlasting. Her labor of life is ended, her work is finished, she performed it to the acceptance of the Master, and is called to received her reward.
