Valentine E. Burkey was born in Bureau County, Illinois, May 24, 1841, and died near Aurora, Missouri, March 23, 1913, age 71 years, 9 months and 29 days.
Valentine was the first of the Burkey family to move westward, taking up his residence in Seward County in 1875. In 1889 he moved to Giltner. He had lived at Aurora, Peru, Cairo, and Henderson. In 1910 he moved to Aurora, Mo., near which place on Easter morning he peacefully departed to the sweeter land beyond.
Mr. Burkey was converted about twenty-four years ago. He belonged to the Evangelical Church and later transferred his membership to the M. E. Church. He was a faithful Christian from early boyhood, and was faithful to his church and to his God to the end.
"How sweet a life was his; how sweet a death;
Living to wing with Mirth the merry hours,
Or with his genial tales the heart to cheer;
Dying to leave a memory like the heath
Of Summer full of sunshine and flowers,
A grief and gladness in the atmosphere."
The funeral services were held from the M. E. Church last Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. O. L. Kendall officiating, interment being made in the Lerton cemetery.
The bereaved family have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.
Those who came from a distance were Joe Burkey of Crete, Lena Dachtler and Chris Burkey of Milford, J. L. Burkey and wife of Lincoln, and Ed Burkey of Alma.
