Mary Jane "Jennie" Strife was born in Martinsburg to Charles Strife and Mary Jane Lockhard/Lockard (ca 1833-1873) She was one of seven children. At the age of 12 she was employed as a housekeeper in Martinsburg, and shortly thereafter her mother died, leaving Jennie and her siblings, some of whom were much younger than she. Jennie married on August 25, 1874 in Montague, NY Daniel Jerry Butts, Jr. and they lived first in Martinsburg and later Montague, NY for much of their married life. They had 5 boys and 1 girl, Dewey D., Hattie Iola, Perry Earl, William D., Clinton Frank, and Stephen J..
