Leslie Arthur Newman, Jr. graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas in 1938 and Texas A&M in 1942. Upon graduation he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. Les was an officer in the 61st Field Artillery Battalion, of the 1st Cavalry Division and participated in combat in both the Admiralty and Philippine Islands during the war. He was also part of the 1st Cavalry's initial occupation of Japan on September 2, 1945. Among a number of awards, he received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his war service in the Pacific. After World War II, Les remained in the Army Reserves until his retirement as a Colonel.
