Spouse: A. Elwood Sanner
Marriage: May 25, 1937 Alhambra, California
Ruby Emma Sanner
Ruby Emma Sanner, 88, of Nampa, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2003, at Karcher Estates. Funeral services will be concluded at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, at the College Church of the Nazarene, 504 Dewey Ave., Nampa, Burial will be at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell. The family will greet friends and family at the Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel tonight from 7:30 to 9.
Ruby was born April 14, 1915 in Los Angeles, Calif., the second of two children of John William and Florence Calista (Beeson) Kephart. She married A. Elwood Sanner in Alhambra, Calif., May 25, 1937, and together they pastored Nazarene churches in Chico and San Francisco, Calif. In San Francisco, her two daughters were born, Evelyn Louise in 1943 and Patricia Ruth in 1947.
In 1950 the family moved to Nampa where Elwood was hired to teach theology at Northwest Nazarene College. Ruby, who began teaching piano lessons when she was 18, joined the music faculty at NNC and taught there for 35 years. In addition to teaching individual lessons, class piano, hymn-playing, and music theory, she accompanied student and faculty soloists and musical ensembles.
Ruby is perhaps best remembered in the community as the pianist at College Church of the Nazarene, where she served God through music for 35 years. She was the perfect accompanist — all music ministers who served with her at College Church believed she could read their minds and anticipate every musical need. She is also remembered for her beautiful offertories and hymn arrangements. She also served in the community as an adjudicator for many piano competitions and was an accompanist for the Musettes.
After Elwood's death in 1997, she became especially close to her granddaughter, Cristina Barnes, who was in many ways more like a sister or bosom buddy. In 2000 she moved to Karcher Estates, where she renewed old friendships, made new friends, and received loving care from Donna Lant and her staff.
Survivors include her daughters and their families, Evelyn and Gaymon Bennett of Nampa and Patricia and Rodney Huling of Seattle; grandchildren, Cristina and Charlie Barnes (and daughters Dawn and Taylor) of Nampa, Gaymon (Will) Bennett Jr. of Berkeley, Calif., Maria Bennett of Boise, and Timothy Huling of Seattle. All of her grandchildren are musical, and Tim, like his grandmother, is a professional musician.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Jack and her husband, Elwood.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Ruby E. Sanner/Florence B. Kephart Church Music Fund at Northwest Nazarene University 623 Holy St., Nampa, ID 83686
