Helen F. Garn, Age 98
She passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Garden Estates Care Home in Jackson, Michigan. She was born November 17, 1914, to Frank H. and Chloie A. (Smith) Nixon in Cherry Grove near Cadillac. She married Stewart D. Garn on September 5, 1939, in Meauwataka.
After graduation from Cadillac High School, she received County Normal training, a Bachelor's Degree from Central Michigan and a Master's Degree from Michigan State University. She taught in schools in rural Wexford County and in Manton and Cadillac for 42 years, specializing in teaching reading. After retiring, she tutored numerous individuals in reading including one after her 92nd birthday.
Helen had been a member of and was active in the Meauwataka Free Methodist Church and remained faithful to the Church after her move to Jackson. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In her earlier years she loved making ceramics, painting, and crocheting afghans. She loved to travel, making several trips to Japan and Europe as well as numerous places in the U.S. to visit family.
She is survived by three sons, Dr. Dennis S. Garn of Jerome, MI, Dr. Lynn E. (Karyl) Garn of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Capt. (U.S. Navy, Ret.) Stanley N. (Janet) Garn of Jacksonville, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hambley of Portage and Anna Hosmer of Cadillac; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; half-brothers Elwin Holly and Chester Holly; half-sisters May Holly and Florence Irene (Holly) Scarbrough; and brothers Wilbur Nixon, Bruce E. Nixon, Harlan S. Nixon, William G. Nixon, and Howard E. Nixon.
Funeral services were held at Cherry Grove Nazarene Church with her grandson, Reverend Nathan Garn, officiating.
