At one time, Ellen H. Clapsaddle was the most famous and prolific illustrator of postcards and greeting cards in the country. Although she was in Germany working with an engraving company when World War I broke out, she was able to return to the United States, in July of 1915. From 1915 to 1920 she lived and worked in NYC, frequently visiting her hometown of Richfield Springs. She sailed back to Germany in 1921 and stayed for 9 months. She returned and lived and worked in Manhattan as evidenced by her listings in the 1920 and 1930 US Censuses, citing her as a self supporting greeting card artist.She was admitted to the Peabody Home in New York City January, 1932 and died there Jan 7, 1934. Her Jan 12 obit states that her service was held and she was interred in the famly plot in Lake View Cemetery next to her parents, Dean L. Clapsaddle and Harriet Beckwith Clapsaddle.
