Corporal Thompson was a member of Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on August 15, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. Corporal Thompson was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
