John "Jack" Hatt of 2131 First Avenue SE, died Monday afternoon, March 31, 2003, in St. Luke's Hospital. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.

Jack was born in Marion, Iowa, the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Tice Hatt. He graduated from Marion High School and attended Coe College before enlisting in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

After his medical discharge he went into business for himself, operating service stations, parking lots and was part owner and manager of Armstrong's Parking Garage. He purchased the Airport Limousine Service and Hertz Rent-a-Car franchise. He rented cars and trucks under his own name, handled air freight and held numerous postal contracts.

He was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, being head usher for several years. He was a member of U.S. Jaycees, holding the local office of president, state office of national director, for which he received the Clint Dunagan Award as one of the outstanding directors of the national organization in 1952. He was chairman of the International Relations Committee of International Junior Chamber of Commerce and was named first National Chaplain of the United States Jaycees. He was inducted into the Jaycees Hall of Leadership in 1983 and was J. C. I. Senator No. 80.

Hew was given the Distinguished Civic Award presented by the Civic Bureau of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce in 1957. He was a former chairman of the Salvation Army Board and former president of Navy League of Cedar Rapids.

He was a member of the Cedar Rapids/Marion Chamber of Commerce, Presidents Club of the University of Iowa and 50-year member of Elmcrest County Club.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorris; son Alan of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Shirley Mitchell and husband Bill of Ludington, Michigan, and Jan Mersch and husband Joe of Henderson Nevada; grandchildren, Amber Leinhauser, T. J. and John Mitchell and Casey Mersch; three great-granddaughters, Jessica Taylor and Abigail and Olivia Leinhauser; a sister, Jeanne MacArthur of Phoenix, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, St. Luke's Hospital Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
